Vandal notes: Godoyo shows bounce-back ability

A day after striking out four times, Vandalia junior Leyton Godoyo put the struggles behind him and had six quality at-bats during a doubleheader against Okawville.

The Vandals lost both of those games on Saturday, but Godoyo getting himself straightened out was definitely a bright spot.

“He had a rough day yesterday, but he rebounded well for us today,” said coach Luke Hohlt. “Once he bunted for a hit, you knew he would have a nice day.”

Godoyo tapped the second pitch he saw in the first game down the third-base line and beat the throw to first to start a two-run inning, and in the next inning, he moved two runners ahead on a fielder’s choice to do his part in creating two more runs.

In the second game, Godoyo had two singles – including another bunt – and also reached on an error and had a sacrifice bunt that put the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh inning.

He also stole two bases, scored twice and made four catches in center field.

All of that came less than 24 hours after he struck out four times with runners in scoring position during a 4-0 win against Pana last Friday.

Hohlt’s motto this season has been to “flush” any negative plays that occur during a game or any poor overall performances, and he was pleased to see Godoyo take that advice and run with it.

In a pinch

Senior Christian Schroeder understands that he will have a limited role on this season’s baseball team, but that hasn’t stopped him from making the most of his playing time.

As a pinch hitter against Pana, Schroeder rifled the third pitch he saw into right field for his first hit of the season, sending coaches and teammates into elation.

“Christian is a great kid who has taught me a lot,” Hohlt said. “He comes out every day and works hard, so he will continue getting opportunities like that.”

He started the second game against Okawville, and had an infield single and made three catches in right field, including one that resulted in a double play to end the first inning.

Unique trip

Junior Dalton Wehrle did not take the traditional approach to scoring in the second inning of the second game against Okawville.

He was hit by a pitch to reach base, advanced to second on a steal, advanced to third on an error during his steal attempt and scored on a wild pitch.

Wehrle later scored in the fourth and was hit by another pitch in the fifth.
