ANNOUNCEMENTS
Wednesday, July 13
• The St. Elmo Christian Church will accept items for the garage sale from 5-8 p.m.

• The Avena Township Park Board, 7 p.m., St. Elmo Community Park Centennial Building.
Thursday, July 14
• At the fairgrounds, the county 4-H project check-in is at 8 a.m. in the exhibit hall, and the general project show judging starts at 9 a.m.
The county 4-H public speaking contest is at 5 p.m. in the fairgrounds show ring.
The hall where the projects are judged will be opened at 3 p.m. for general viewing by the public.
Projects must stay on display until 7 p.m., when they must be picked up.
At 6 p.m., there will be an ice cream social in the show arena to celebrate all the week’s successes. Each club is asked to take two gallons of homemade ice cream. The Extension office will furnish the beverages and cookies.
At 6:30 p.m., there will be a 4-H awards program.
All of the general show and food/clothing show best of show, state fair and trophy winners will be announced.

• Post-Polio Survivors and Friends of East Central Illinois will not have a meeting this month. The next meeting will be in August.

Sunday, July 17
• The 85th Stein-Stine reunion will be held in the St. Elmo Community Park Centennial Building. There will be special gospel music.
Monday, July 18
• The St. Elmo Unit of Home and Community Education will go to the Marcoot Jersey Creamery, south of Greenville, for a tour at 10 a.m.
Thursday, July 21
• Vit-Em-In Sunday School Class potluck, 6 p.m., First United Methodist Church fellowship hall.
Fayette County Museum July Exhibits
The special July exhibits in the Fayette County Museum are the following:  Illinois Governors, 1819-1839; the Three Vandalia Statehouses; and Photos and Photo Albums from Fayette County.
The photos and photo albums are from the 1800s and very early 1900s. Some are recent donations to the museum.
In June, the museum had 299 visitors, in addition to the large attendance at the art shows in the gallery.
The museum is located at 301 W. Main St., Vandalia, and tours may be scheduled at 283-4866. The museum is open from 9:30-4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. on Sundays.
Reed 4th of July Guests
Visitors in the home of Irene Reed and her son, Larry, on the 4th of July were Irene’s brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Jaunita Badman, and her nephew and his wife, Ray and Dale Badman, all of Taylorville; her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Dave Arnold of Brownstown; and Leslie Reed of Beecher City.
Friendly Neighbors
Twenty members and guests were present for the July 5 meeting of the Friendly Neighbors held at noon at the Phillips Building.
Attending were Ina Abendroth, MaryEllen Lovett, Cora Miley, Bob and Joanne Owen, Rosemary Owen, Irene Reed, R. W. and Mary Smith, and Laverne and Leona Wright, all of St. Elmo; Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown and guests, Marty and Edith (Garrett) Koleno of Brownstown; Jim and Erma Budlove, who are spending the summer in St. Elmo (they go to California during the winter); and Sasha Curry, Kalie, Andrea and Peyton, all of St. Elmo.
“Happy Birthday” was sung to two who have July birthdays – Jim Budlove, who is 90, and R. W. Smith, who is 81.
For the program, Mary Smith read a quiz article and Rosemary Owen read “Test for Old Kids.”
Wright’s Corner HCE
July is an activity month for units of Home and Community Education. The Wright’s Corner Unit that meets the first Wednesday of each month went to Stauffer’s, west of St. Peter, on July 6. They ate lunch and had either a chicken breast salad or a pork loin dinner. After the meal, they shopped in the store.
Those present were Ina Abendroth, Carol Austin, Kate Jennings, Irene Reed, Rosemary Owen, Mary Smith, Una Tish, Helen Wright and Leona Wright.
Wheatland HCE
A visit to the Altamont Alwerdt’s Gardens the morning of July 7 was the activity for the Wheatland Unit of Home and Community Education.
Those able to go were Joan Aderman, Karen Hyde, Joyce Moore and Fern Moore. They enjoyed the flowers and plants, and after the garden tour, they ate at the Altamont McDonald’s.
Friendship Manor
July birthdays for residents of the Friendship Manor Nursing Home are: Grace Hunt (age 95); Donna Lakin and Stanley Brady on July 1; Louise Low on July 6; Edna McElroy on July 15; Mary Jane Wills on July 24; and Bernice Hoover on July 30. Employees with July birthdays are: Doris Bardish on July 6; Laura Nall on July 17; Jill Mason on July 23; Jayna Buie and Amanda Logsdon on July29; and Tanja Ervin and Jessie Ward on July 31.
A birthday party with all the trimmings and refreshments of cake, ice cream and punch for all will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 20, in the dining room.
On the 4th of July, Friendship Manor Nursing Home had special treats. At 11:30 a.m. on July 6, there was bingo at the bank.
Watermelon was to be served in the dining room  this Wednesday. A drive in the country is scheduled for Thursday, July 21 at 2 p.m.
The resident’s council is at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21. Homemade ice cream is to be served at 3:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25.
A salad bar will be served at noon on Thursday, July 28.
Entertainment was by the Lester White Band the afternoon of July 7, the Beecher City Kitchen Band is scheduled for Thursday, July 14, at 2 p.m., Jerry Frailey is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 16, Pee Wee Denton is scheduled to provide piano entertainment at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 19, Tom Thoele is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Tuesday, July 26, and the Singing Strings are scheduled for Thursday, July 28 at 6 p.m.
