Future Announcement
The University of Illinois Extension will host a workshop, “Finding Your Get Up and Go,” at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Effingham Extension Office.
The program will introduce strategies for getting motivated and taking action, and will cover optimism attitude, social involvement and positive outlook.
There is a fee of $5 per person to cover the cost of materials. Those interested can pre-register by calling 217-347-7773.
Special Exhibits
For October, the Fayette County Museum’s special exhibit cases contain items from the archives.
Featured are funeral items from the 1800s and early 1900s, and harvest scenes and artifacts from the early 1900s.
Woven carpets, recently donated to the museum, now are on display in the museum.
They were saved from the Martin Luther and Ella Staff home in Bluff City before it was torn down years ago.
The museum welcomed 254 visitors during September. Mrs. Hobbie’s Vandalia seventh-grade class and the Antique Study Group from Decatur were given tours.
The museum, located at 301 W. Main St. in Vandalia, is open from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from1-4 p.m. on Sundays. Tours may be scheduled by calling 283-4866.
Friendly Neighbors
Scarecrows, apples and a fall arrangement decorated the tables for the Friendly Neighbors held at noon Oct. 4 at the Phillips Building.
Mary Smith did the tables and gave the meal blessing.
After the meal, Marjorie Sarver gave a humorous nostalgic reading on aprons.
Others present from St. Elmo were Ina Abendroth, Rosemary Owen, Irene Reed, R. W. Smith, and Laverne and Louise Wright. Others present were Shirley Smith from Altamont (whom they welcomed back), Paula Brunk and Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown and Cora Miley of Beecher City.
CCW
“What you like best about fall” was the roll call answered by members of the Council of Catholic Women that met the evening of Oct. 4 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church parish hall. Cards were signed for several that are ill.
The DCCW Convention with the theme “Rejoice and Renew” was held Sept. 28 at the Effingham Keller Convention Center.
Those attending from St. Elmo were Karen Denning, Pat Porter and Ann Rowland, and they reported on attending different sessions.
Bishop Paprocki of Springfield had the Mass.
The dinner included stuffed chicken breast, red potatoes, carrots, tossed salad, lemon and chocolate torte and beverages.
Plans were finalized for St. Mary’s annual fall dinner on Sunday, Nov. 13, which will feature turkey and roast beef.
Hostesses Jan Niemeyer and Chick Kuebler (who was unable to attend) served apple crisp, ice cream, peanuts, corn candy, tea and coffee.
Those present were Karen Denning, Loretta Heischmidt, Lucille Koeberlein, Mary Myers, Jan Niemeyer, Pat Porter and Natalie Stout.
St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club
Members of the St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club went to Majik Hands for a program for the club’s Oct. 6 meeting.
Greg and Joy Hissong gave foot messages to members who wanted them and a hand message to one member.
Some of the members first met at St. Mary’s Catholic Church to pool rides.
Those who went to Majik Hands were Susan Belden, Karen Denning, Norma Engeljohn, Shannon Engeljohn, Debbie Hough, Pat Porter, Anna Jean Rhodes, Ann Rowland, Peggy Stolte and Carolyn White.
Malia Stephens served samples of Tastefully Simple snacks: beer bread, cheddar soup, a spinach and herb dip, pound cake with chocolate dip. She was assisted by her daughter, Sierra.
The members then went to St. Mary’s Catholic Church parish hall for the business meeting, and joining them were Neva Carter and Lucille Koeberlein.
President Porter opened the meeting with all giving the club collect and the pledge of allegiance.
Porter thanked the club members who helped with the SEBA Labor Day stand to sell tickets for the 50/50 drawing. They were Karen Denning, Lucille Koeberlein, Anna Jean Rhodes, Ann Rowland and Carolyn White in addition to Porter.
Blood drive chairman Denning asked the St. Elmo Women’s Civic Club members to make cookies for the blood drive that was to be held the afternoon of Oct.10 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church parish hall, and several volunteered to do so.
Fundraiser chairman Rhodes gave out the information and order sheets for the Collin Street Bakery fruit cakes and the Uncle Al’s nuts and candies.
The orders are to be turned in to her at the Nov. 3 meeting, which will be held at 7 p.m. at the St. Elmo Public Library.
The hostesses, Carter and Rhodes, served punch and rum cake for refreshments. The cake was from the Collin Street Bakery.
Wright’s Corner HCE
Instead of meeting at the Loudon Town House on Oct. 5, Wright’s Corner Unit of Home and Community Education met at the Altamont Lutheran Care Center in the conference room. Chairman Irene Reed opened the meeting with all giving the pledge of allegiance.
Mary Smith gave the special feature lesson, “Make Your Own Edible Centerpiece,” and the major lesson “International Lesson – Scotland.”
In addition to Reed and Mary Smith, HCE members present were Ina Abendroth, Carol Austin, Kate Jennings, Rosemary Owen, Shirley Smith, Una Tish, Helen Wright and Leona Wright. Guests were Nancy Arnold and Paula Brunk of Brownstown, and Shirley Smith’s friend from out-of-state.
Wheatland HCE
Wheatland Unit of Home and Community Education met the afternoon of Oct. 6, with Joan Aderman, MaryEllen Lovett, Karen Hyde, Sandra Lovett, Fern Moore, Joyce Moore and Ethelyn Williams present.
Lovett gave a report on a book about painted quilts on barns.
Hyde gave the major lesson, “International Lesson-Scotland,” and passed out the special feature lesson sheets for  “Make Your Own Edible Centerpiece.”
Members filled out the 2011-12 program books with the theme “The Perfect Garden.”
Aderman served banana cake, coconut bars, tea and coffee.
