• The Fayette County Home and Community Education annual meeting at Northside Christian Church at 1845 W. Jackson St., Vandalia. Registration is at 5:30 p.m., potluck 6 p.m. The business meeting will include a memorial service, 2015-16 budget approval, election and installation of officers and awards for Homemaker of the Year and Unit of the Year. The Illinois Association of HCE president, Jane Chapman, will be present and install the officers.

Future Announcement
The 2015 Amateur Town & Country Art Show and Professional Art show will be open to the public, free of charge, June 20-28, in Artworks Gallery, upstairs at the Fayette County Museum, Vandalia. The hours are 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and 1-4 p.m. Sundays.
At 7 p.m. on Friday, June 19, there will be an opening critique and reception.
Fayette County Museum Special Exhibits
The special exhibits in the Fayette County Museum, Vandalia for June are “Wedding Memories” and “1910’s Father’s Day.”
Kathryn Bell Obit
Naomi Kathryn Bell, 88, of Goodyear, Ariz., and formerly of St. Elmo, died on June 4, 2015. Graveside services will be held on Thursday in Peoria, Ariz. at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona. Menke Funeral Home of Peoria, Ariz., handled the arrangements. Memorials: Donor’s choice.
She was born Aug. 24, 1926 to Walter and Alta Fields in Ada, Okla. She worked as librarian at the St. Elmo Elementary School for 15 years and was active in the St. Elmo First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Ray H. Bell of Goodyear, Ariz.; sons, Keith Bell and wife Donna of Dewey, Ariz., and Kenneth Bell and wife Veronica of Avondale, Ariz.; and daughters, Karen and husband Bob McClain of La Mesa, Calif., Kathy and husband Steven Schallert of Effingham, and Karla and husband Rex Vail of Gilbertsville, Ky.
Friendly Neighbors
Friendly Neighbors met at noon on June 2 at Mary Ann’s Restaurant, with the following present: Cora Miley and Ruth Havener of Beecher City, Marybelle Ledbetter of Brownstown and Malinda Miller, Bob and Joann Owen, Irene Reed, and R. W. and Mary Smith of St. Elmo.
They enjoyed visiting and talking about their gardens. Mary said that having raised beds in her garden made it easier for her to work in it.
CCW
Officers for the 2015-16 year were installed at the Council of Catholic Women’s meeting held the evening of June 2 in St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parish Hall. Helen Bergman installed Mona Durbin as president, Karen Denning as vice president, Carol Rine as secretary and Pat Porter as treasurer.
The CCW does not meet in July and August; the next meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The meeting opened with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. Roll call was answered with “What are your plans for the summer?” Others present in addition to those mentioned were LaVonne Kramer, Mary Myers and Betty Springman.
The family of Pauline Springman sent a thank you to the CCW for providing a meal at the funeral. Those present signed cards for parish members in nursing homes, etc.
Announcement was made of the Annual Day of Prayer for Life on June 24. It will be held at the Teutopolis St. Francis Catholic Church. Adoration will be at 7 p.m. and a mass at 7:30 p.m.
Discussed was having a farewell for Father Simberger, who will leave in August.
Blood drive chairman Denning asked CCW to provide homemade cookies for the June 15 drive that will be in the church Parish Hall.
Hostess Springman served crackers, cheese balls, a dessert and candies.
Wright’s Corner HCE
After opening with the Pledge of Allegiance, roll call “Have you ever been to a circus?” was answered by Kate Jennings, Amanda Miller, Irene Reed, Mary Smith and Helen Wright at the Wright’s Corner Unit of Home and Community Education meeting held the afternoon of June 3 in the Loudon Township building. All have been to a circus.
Wright gave the special feature, “Fantastic Foil,” and the major lesson, “The ABC’s of GMO’s”
For the major lesson, she provided three different kinds of cookies for the members to compare. She also served Kool-Aid.
Wheatland Unit HCE
The Wheatland Unit of Home and Community Education met the afternoon of June 4 at Mary Ann’s Restaurant. After the Pledge of Allegiance, roll call, “Have you ever been to a circus?” was answered by Karen Hyde, Erna Koontz, Joyce Moore and Ethelyn Williams.
Chairman Hyde read the May County HCE board notes. Discussions were on the Bond County safe place for women and the Fayette County HCE annual meeting, which will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 16, at the Vandalia Northside Christian Church.
A humorous article, “Medicare Part G,” that was sent by member Joan Aderman, was read.
All participated in discussing the Growing Herbs, Cooking with Herbs and the ABC’s of GMO’s lessons.
The July plans are to eat lunch on Thursday, July 2, at the Round Table in Taylorville.
Baptisms at First UMC
During the morning worship at the First United Methodist Church on June 7, Pastor Dan Laack baptized Angel Schoenhoff, Bethany Schoenhoff and Tessa Davis. Angel and Bethany are children of Gerald and Deborah Schoenhoff, and Tessa is their foster child.
Shannon Moss announced that the FUMC Bible school will be held during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday school hours each Sunday from June-August and that all kids interested in going to Bible school are invited to attend.
Richard Tucker was organist and Joanne Maxey was pianist. After Laack’s message, there was Communion.
Rhodes-Side Gleanings
Ladies’ Tea was held from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, June 7 in the Altamont First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Proceeds from the tickets at $5 each were for the AMA Food Pantry.
Tables were set up for 100. Decorations were in a wedding theme – wedding dresses were around the room and a large, tiered wedding cake was on the serving table. Refreshments included punch, eight kinds of cake and many kinds of tea. Those attending were to take a tea cup and saucer; if they didn’t, one was furnished.
I enjoyed visiting with many of the Altamont area residents I know. I was a guest of Rosemary Hardaway.
Tiny Dona Strullmyer, a well-known semi-retired photographer, sat at the same table and she had on her lace wedding dress. She now weighs only 2 pounds more than she did when she married Willard Strullmyer on Sept. 7, 1958, so the dress fits perfectly!
