Sr. Legion squad stays over .500

Vandalia’s Sr. Legion squad remains above .500 after splitting four games over the past week.

And with just a couple of weeks left in the season, Post 95 will be looking to finish the summer on a winning streak.

Vandalia will be busy over the next week, with a nine-inning game at Effingham on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., a doubleheader at Salem on Friday at 6 p.m., a doubleheader at Robinson on Sunday at 2 p.m., a nine-inning game at Teutopolis at 6 p.m. next Tuesday and a nine-inning game at home against Patoka next Wednesday.

All of those games except the second one against Salem will count in the District standings.

Although the Mattoon Firecracker Classic was canceled this past weekend due to scheduling conflicts and rain, Post 95 was able to replace those four games.

On Sunday, Vandalia came out on the short end in a pair of games at Lincoln, falling 3-0 and 9-8.

Austin Schwarm, Brett Mueller and Tyson Spencer each had three hits in game two, and their offensive contributions allowed Post 95 to be ahead for most of the game.

Mueller drove home Kaiah Miller in the top of the first inning, and Post 95 consistently added runs for the rest of the game to take a 7-4 lead after the top of the sixth.

Lincoln, however, would add four runs in the sixth to go ahead, 8-7.

Vandalia tied the game in the top of the seventh after Ian Kirk was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second by a Miller bunt and scored on an error with Schwarm at bat.

An error would help Lincoln win the game in the bottom of the frame, as a batter who was hit by a pitch would later reach third on an overthrow during a steal attempt, and an infield single then allowed him to score.

Spencer was hit with the loss, and Vandalia’s four pitchers combined for just one strikeout and walked six.

In game one, Post 95 had just three hits against a tough left-hander from Lincoln, and a couple of defensive breakdowns combined with some timely hitting by Lincoln gave it the win.

Raustin Zahradka started for Post 95, but had to exit in the fourth inning due to elbow soreness. He had struck out three and allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and a walk.

Last Friday, Vandalia needed a late rally to get by Zach Gardewine and St. Anthony in a 12-7 win at Vandalia Mutual Field.

Down 5-0 going to the bottom of the sixth, Post 95 was finally able to string together several hits off of Gardewine, chasing him from the game and scoring nine times in the inning.

St. Anthony added a pair of runs in the seventh before Vandalia added another five, but Tyson Spencer would pitch the final 2 1/3 innings to seal the victory.

Miller was 3-for-4 in the game to pace the offense, and Seth Lohman and Mueller each had two hits and two RBI.

Tristan Wesselman started for Vandalia, tossing five innings and striking out six. Schwarm picked up the win in relief, throwing 1 2/3 innings and striking out a pair.

Last Thursday, Vandalia traveled to Bluford and picked up a 7-4 victory.

Dalton Goldsmith pitched a complete game, allowing no earned runs on six hits.

He also picked up two hits on offense, as did Schwarm. Leyton Godoyo was 1-for-4, with two steals and a run.
