Vandalia takes 3rd, finishes year 7-9-2

The hopes of South Central’s 18U team for an unbeaten season were quashed with a loss in their final game of the summer, the championship game of their postseason tournament.


South Central advanced to the title game against Salem at Lions Field in Kinmundy by eeking past Vandalia on Friday night.
An 8-3 loss in the championship game on Saturday ended South Central’s season with an 13-0-1 record.
After losing to South Central on Friday night, Vandalia rebounded to defeat Altamont in the third-place game on Saturday.
On Friday night, South Central scored a run in the bottom of the second, but Vandalia knotted the score in the top of the third.
South Central led 3-1 after four innings, and after Vandalia responded with four runs in the top of the fifth, South Central jumped back on top with three runs in the inning to take a 6-5 lead.
Vandalia tied the score in the top of the sixth when Gabe Cox was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
After the first two South Central batters walked in the bottom of the sixth, Sebastian Cowger ripped a line drive to right field to score the winning run.
Much of the offense for both teams in the contest was provided via walks and batters hit by pitches.
South Central pitchers walked 13 batters, and Vandalia’s pitchers put eight runners on base with walks.
Kyle Guffey gave up six runs, four of them earned, in five innings. Guffey struck out five, walked six and allowed just three hits.
Blake Morrison took the loss, giving up two walks and a hit while striking out two in the final inning.
Caleb Slater was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead Vandalia on offense. Gabe Cox was 0-for-2 but had two RBIs.
