ALTAMONT – St. Elmo/Brownstown overwhelmed Beecher City in all four quarters of a blowout win in the fifth-place game of the National Trail Conference Tournament.

Senior Jacob Behrends scored his 1,000th career point, senior Levi Maxey led the team with 21 points, six steals and five rebounds, and the Eagles scored 25 points off of 21 Beecher City turnovers in last Saturday’s 63-37 victory.

“The way we started the tournament, I was a little leery,” said SEB coach Greg Feezel. “Getting out of here with two wins, at least we are feeling good about ourselves.

“This late in the year, you have to keep feeling good about yourself, because confidence is a big thing.”

SEB (14-8) opened the tournament with an uninspired effort in being upset by Neoga last Tuesday, and had to hold off a hard-charging Windsor squad in last Thursday’s consolation semifinals.

But by maintaining composure against Beecher City in the fifth-place game, the Eagles had little trouble securing the victory.

The first four minutes were close, but SEB used an 8-2 run to close the first period and take a 15-8 lead, and then extended the run to 17-2 before Beecher City scored with 4:52 left in the second quarter.

Once the Eagles got ahead by 20 at the start of the third period, Beecher City was unable to get any closer.

“We came in here and handled it right,” Feezel said. “Sometimes it’s hard to play in this game.”

Behrends hit his 1,000th career point on a driving layup with 7:18 left in the game, and he finished with eight points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Sophomore Malachi Maxey had 12 points, and freshman Landon Feezel added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.

Freshman Colten Miller debuted and scored a layup in the fourth quarter.
