School levy gives taxpayers an option

A choice between higher sales tax or higher property taxes

By Rich Bauer, Managing Editor

The Vandalia School District is giving taxpayers in the district a choice – approve an increase in the local sales tax or handle an increase in property taxes.
After recommending passage of a lower tax levy last month, the Vandalia Board of Education approved such a levy last week.
The new tax levy has an aggregate total of $4,473,757, which is lower than the previous levy by $87,292.
“The levy is a total decrease of 1.42 percent,” Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Garrison said prior to the board’s vote.
