Lady Vandals win first tennis match

The Lady Vandals tennis team won its first match of the season on Tuesday, defeating Shelbyville, 6-3.

A match at Roxana on Monday was canceled due to a scheduling error.

Vandalia swept all but one singles match against the Lady Rams, and won one doubles match.

St. Elmo wins season-opener

Connor Beasley struck out four over five innings, and Levi Maxey was 2-for-3 and picked up a two-inning save as St. Elmo notched a season-opening, 6-2, victory at Dieterich on Tuesday.

Dalton Parks, Nick Bauer and Ben Davis each also had singles for St. Elmo (1-0) in the National Trail Conference game.

Beasley (1-0) held the Maroons to three hits, while allowing one earned run and issuing five walks.

Maxey tossed the final two innings, striking out two. His only blemish was one walk.

St. Elmo travels to North Clay on Thursday.

Swofford wins at Pana, Vandals take 2nd

Vandalia senior Blake Swofford won his second golf tournament of the season on Monday, shooting a 1-under-par 35 to win at Pana.

The Vandals (0-1) were outscored by the Panthers, 179-184.

Swofford had a birdie on hole No. 5, and won the event by eight strokes.

Sophomore Zach Schaal shot a 46, sophomore Adam Palmer shot a 50 and senior Zach Jackson shot a 53 to round out Vandalia's scoring.

In addition, sophomore Jake Bowen had a 56 and senior Leyton Godoyo had a 59 for the Vandals.

The scoring golfers for Pana (2-0) each had between 43 and 46.

Last Thursday's tournament at Governors Run was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Sept. 11.

The next event for the Vandals is at home on Thursday. The 4 p.m. tournament will feature Ramsey and Altamont.

South Central holds off Altamont

Noah Powless hit his first career varsity home run, and the Cougars held off a late rally by Altamont on Monday to win their season-opener, 7-6.

Shawn Meyer picked up the victory for South Central (1-0), tossing six innings and striking out seven in the team's first-ever National Trail Conference game.

Meyer (1-0) allowed three earned-runs on four hits and three walks. Dan Diss earned the save, striking out one in the seventh, while allowing one run on two walks.

Dylan Smith powered a two-run double in third inning for his first career varsity hit, and Kyle Bray was 1-for-3, with an RBI for the Cougars.
