The Next Level: College athlete roundup (Jan. 19)

Many athletes that spent their high school years in Fayette County have moved on to play for college or professional teams. Below are the athletes who played this past week.

Jessica Earnest • Junior • Vanderbilt University

•Jan. 13-15 – Earnest, a Vandalia grad, placed second individually to be named to the all-tournament team at the Mid-Winter Classic at Arkansas State University. She averaged 221 over seven games on Saturday, with a high game of 244 and a low game of 204. On Sunday, she helped Vanderbilt defeat Arkansas State twice to win the team championship. In the semifinals, the Commodores downed the Red Wolves, 4-2, and in the championship match, Vanderbilt won, 4.5-2.5 That was the team's second straight title at the event. The Commodores return to the lanes next Friday-Sunday at the Kutztown University Invitational.

Isaac Grapperhaus • Junior • Illinois College

•Jan. 14 – Grapperhaus, a South Central graduate, scored seven points in 25 minutes off of the bench during an 82-72 loss at Ripon College. He also had three blocks and one rebound during the game. The Blueboys are 3-10, and return to action on Friday against Carroll University at 7 p.m.

•Jan. 13 – Grapperhaus started and scored two points in 25 minutes during a 79-70 loss at St. Norbert College. He also had two assists in the game.

•Jan. 10 – Grapperhaus scored 21 points off of the bench during 115-113 shootout loss at Grinnell College. He hit 8-of-9 field goals, and also had six rebounds and three blocks.

Laura Hobbie • Junior • Greenville College

•Jan. 12 – Hobbie, a Vandalia graduate, started and played 42 minutes during a 64-62 overtime loss to Fontbonne. She scored 10 points in the game, and also had eight rebounds, three steals and one assist. Greenville is 4-9 through Tuesday, and played Webster on Wednesday. On Saturday, the Panthers travel to Spalding.

Ann Githinji • Senior • Greenville College

•Jan. 12 – Githinji, a South Central graduate, played one minute off of the bench during a 64-62 overtime loss to Fontbonne.

Audrey Matheny • Sophomore • Lake Land

•Matheny, a South Central graduate, has played in 16 games for Lake Land this season, having scored 35 points.
