Armed Forces Tribute is Friday

The Vandalia Commission's second annual Armed Forces Tribute is Friday night on the Vandalia Statehouse lawn.
It begins with 5 p.m. meal catered by Country Rhodes of Effingham. An all-you-can-eat buffet includes fried walleye, popcorn shrimp, chicken strips, potato salad, cole slaw, applesauce, baked beans, steak fries, hush puppies and dessert. The cost is $9 for adults and $6 for children 12 and under. Carry-outs will be available.
A program begins at 6 p.m. with Brownstown VFW Post 9770 presenting the colors. Local veterans will talk about their military experiences, and the Illinois Army National Guard's 144th Band from Springfield will perform.

VCHS Alumni to hold fish fry on Friday

The Vandalia Alumni and Friends will hold a fish fry from 4-7 p.m. on Friday at the Vandalia Junior High School cafeteria.
Catered by Country Rhodes in Effingham, the buffet meal will include fried walleye, popcorn shrimp, chicken strips, potato salad, cole slaw, applesauce, baked beans, steak fries, hush puppies, drinks and dessert.
The cost is $9 for adults, and $6 for ages 11 and under. Tickets are available at all Vandalia Schools offices, and will be sold at the door. Checks used as payment should be written out to: OCF/VAF Foundation.

New Beginnings Brunch is May 31

Soroptimist International of Vandalia is now accepting reservations for a brunch it is holding for local widowed and divorced women of all ages.
The New Beginnings Brunch will be held on May 31 from 10 a.m.-noon at St. James Lutheran Church, 727 W. Gallatin St., Vandalia.
The brunch will include speakers, music and door prizes.
Reservations are accepted through May 24. To register, call Judy Wasmuth at 283-2989 or 267-7637.

Relay for Life golf scramble is May 31

An 18-hole golf scramble to benefit Fayette County Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, May 31, at Ramsey Lake Golf Course in Ramsey. The scramble is for four-person teams, and the entry fee is $50 per person. Trophies will be awarded for first and second place.
Hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks will be provided.

Vandalia Rehab holding open house

Vandalia Rehab and Health Care, located at 1500 W. St. Louis Ave., will hold a therapy open house from 10 a.m.-noon.
Those attending can tour the therapy gym, meet therapy staff members and receive information about therapy services available at the facility. Refreshments will be available.
