Long runs, defense lead Vandals to big win at Roxana

ROXANA - Eight tackles for loss and three touchdown runs of at least 59 yards propelled the Vandals to a 39-7 victory at Roxana on Friday night.

Senior Ryan Ambuehl scored on a 71-yard run on the second play of the game for the team's longest rush of the season, and senior Tim Ritchey scored on runs of 59 and 62 yards on back-to-back drives in the second quarter to give Vandalia a 27-7 halftime lead.

In the first half, Vandalia recorded six of its tackles of for loss, including four from senior Jeff Lucken, who added another in the fourth quarter and a fumble recovery in the third quarter. Ritchey made an interception in the second quarter.

Other touchdowns for Vandalia included 9- and 13-yard runs for senior Alex Newsom, and a 1-yard plunge for junior C.J. Runkel, his first career varsity touchdown.

The win moves Vandalia to 3-1 on the season, and there is now a five-way tie for first place in the South Central Conference after Pana upset Carlinville on Friday night. Greenville and Staunton are the other teams at 3-1.

Vandalia hosts Litchfield next Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the homecoming game.
