Lady Vandals top Flora, Lady Bombers win two

Three players scored in double figures and the Lady Vandalia held off a barrage of three-pointers in the fourth quarter to avenge a loss to Flora earlier this season.

Olivia Marquardt led the Lady Vandals with 19 points, and sophomores Megan Kern and Lanee McNary each contributed 16 in the 66-58 home win on Monday.
Flora led 17-13 after one quarter, but Vandalia outscored the Lady Wolves 9-5 in the second quarter to lead 24-22 at halftime.
An 18-13 edge in the third quarter put the Lady Vandals up 42-35, and a basket by Rachel Zimmerman gave Vandalia a 12-point lead at 47-35 before Flora started firing three-pointers.
Zimmerman and Kern scored to make it 51-38, a Flora three-pointer cut the lead to 10, then Kern scored hit two free throws and McNary followed with a steal and layup to make it 55-41.
Two-pointers by Marquardt and Kern were offset by two Flora three-pointers, then Flora began sending the Lady Vandals to the free-throw line.
Katlyn McKinney made four of six down the stretch and Marquardt three of four, while Flora made two more three-pointers.
In all, Flora made seven-three-pointers in the fourth quarter and 11 in the game.
The win avenged a 54-49 loss to Flora in the Newton Tournament in November.
In that loss, Lady Vandals coach Michelle McNary said, “We were sloppy, and we didn’t really have anybody scoring.”
On Monday night, McNary said, “We just played hard. In fact, we have played with more intensity the last couple of games.
“That’s what I always tell the girls – if we play hard and leave it all out on the floor, you never know what happens,” she said. “Playing hard and giving a good effort can make a big difference.
“This was a game that I thought going in that we could win, and I think the girls stepped up and did a nice job,” McNary said.
Sydney Cammon led Flora with 28 points.
The win over Flora came on the heels of a 58-35 win at Roxana last Thursday night.
In that game, Marquardt made 13 of 18 from two-point range in compiling 28 points. Marquardt also had six offensive rebounds and five defensive rebounds.
Kern was also in double figures with five two-pointers.
Vandalia led 22-9 in the first quarter and 33-15 at halftime. Vandalia outscored Roxana 16-6 in the third quarter, and Roxana had a 14-9 edge in the final quarter.
