Lady Eagles beat Ramsey in EIC action

ST. ELMO – Prior to a delay for lightning seen in the distance, it looked like Ramsey was going to get into the win column in Egyptian-Illini Conference play.

But something about that 30-minute delay last Wednesday must have motivated St. Elmo’s players, because the Lady Eagles scored 10 times in the final four innings to earn the 12-6 victory.

St. Elmo had plenty of base runners prior to the delay, but had managed just two runs, and the game’s feel suggested that Ramsey was in line to break its losing streak.

Lady Rams senior Shaunna Rainey blasted a solo home run in the top of the first inning for her first one of the season,  and senior Taylor Knisley had an RBI triple in the third inning that gave Ramsey a 3-0 lead.

Three errors by the Lady Rams allowed two St. Elmo runs to score, but a triple by senior Jordan Blackburn and a St. Elmo error in the top of the fourth gave Ramsey a 4-2 lead when the lightning was spotted.

In the bottom of the fifth, St. Elmo had five hits – including a triple by senior Savannah Feezel and a double from senior Samantha Austin – to score five runs and take a 7-4 lead.

Ramsey got a run back in the top of the sixth, but St. Elmo’s bats did not slow down, scoring another five runs in the bottom of the frame.

Junior Danie Austin provided a two-run single, and Audriana Pruett also drove home a run, with a Ramsey error also contributing to the scoring. The Lady Rams had nine errors in the loss.

Ramsey fell to 0-2 in the EIC, and St. Elmo is 1-0.
