Evergreen Outreach-April 7, 2011

By Joyce Mueller
Finally, we have moved into the spring season. The days are longer; the songs of birds are heard; the fields will soon become dark patches for planting; and new life is all around us. Very soon, it will be Easter, and everyone attending Evergreen Outreach has expectations of the special afternoon presentations.
This past Monday, we had a capacity crowd of 150 or more.
Pam Childers, our pianist, arrived early to start the program with a variety of favorite tunes. Some of her selections were: “Bye, Bye, Blackbird,” “On Top of Old Smoky,” “My Darlin’ Clementine” and “Bill Bailey.”
Beulah Brown, leader of the day, continued the program with the “Welcome"  and "EO” songs.
She acknowledged five birthday honorees this week: Bobby Moore (6th), Jennifer Ulmer (8th), and Betty Tucker, Robert Nelson and Mary Porter (all on the 10th). Everyone sang “Happy Birthday” to them.
Volunteers served cookies (courtesy of Joyce Staff) with coffee, iced tea and water.
The Rev. Joe Lawson presented the scripture, referring to Psalm 19. It reads, in part, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day, they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge."
Lawson continued, saying, “Each spring, things come to life. You can present bouquets of flowers, or even bouquets of wonder to others. We thank God for the beauty of the earth.”
Noted among the guests were: Mrs. Joe Lawson (Joy), the Rev. Jim Fackler, and Al and Susan Schumacher.
The entertainment was presented by 65 third-grade students from Vandalia Elementary School. They were accompanied by teachers Shelli Ratermann, Kelley Bellaver and Jenny Lester. The first selection was the “Multiplication Song," followed by “God Bless the USA,” “The Star Spangled Banner” and “I’m a Little Teacup.”
A “London Bridge” arch was formed by volunteers, and as the children filed off the stage, they went through the arch and were awarded candy suckers.
Beulah opened a "bumbershoot" (another name for an umbrella or parasol) and led the group in a “constructive-to-learning” song about it. Some of the guests requested, “If You’re Happy,” and she concluded the program with it.
Pinochle players Peggy Lippold and Shirley Locke won two games, while Richard Kruenegel and John Hunsley won one.
Scheduled for next week are: Fackler, leader and scripture; Donna Smith, pianist; Edith Elliott, writer; and special entertainment by Judy Varga and Randy Schukar.
A final note from the HCE Source:  “Always have something beautiful in sight, even if it is a daisy in a jelly jar.”
CARPE DIEM (seize the day).
