Evergreen Outreach

By Edith Elliott
What a day! What a joy! On Monday, it was 70 degrees outside, but we enjoyed the spirit of Christmas inside Wesley Hall at First United Methodist Church.
Donna Smith greeted us with a medley of beautiful Christmas carols: “Hark, the Herald Angels Sing,” “There’s a Song in the Air” and “Joy to the World,” to name a few.
Beulah Brown led in the “Welcome” and “Outreach” songs, then introduced Joe Lawson, who brought a devotional based on Matthew 2. Lawson told how the wise men sought directions to find the baby Jesus. He advised that when you are lost, you should get help.
Lawson shared a story about a time when his son, Tim, got lost on the road and called home. Lawson advised his son to look for a star. Tim said, “There’s no star, Dad; it’s pouring down rain.”
“Get out of the car,” Lawson said, “and look for a star.”
Sure enough, he was able to see a star through a break in the clouds. Using that as a reference point, Lawson was able to guide him home.
Brown asked the EO guests what was important about Christmas. They gave answers of presents, caroling, lights, Santa Claus and Jesus’ birthday.
Brown then read a poem called “The Night Jesus Came.”
She also initiated a game called “Dropping Cranberries in a Cup.” She had three guests who volunteered to help.
Fifteen students from the First United Methodist Church Preschool came on stage to charm the audience with three delightful holiday songs. Those songs were: “The Wise Men Came to See the Little Child,” “Running, Running, Swimming, Searching to See Where the Baby is Born” and “I Want to Wish You a Merry Christmas.”
Birthdays this week are Walter Mayer, Eugene Marshal and Becky Summerlott.
In the pinochle corner, Rosamund Hobler and Peggy Lippold won two games while Shirley Locke and John Hunsley won one.
We missed several volunteers this week due to illness or other commitments.
Come join us next week.
