Evergreen Outreach

By Charlene Jett
Monday's Evergreen Outreach meeting started with a smile, as Phyllis Rames was our leader. It was smooth as silk and warm as toast, in spite of the blustery cold weather.
Three quarters of the Fourgiven Quartet made their way to Wesley Hall to share their faith and Southern gospel music with us. They were DeWayne Brown, lead singer, Bob Culbertson, tenor singer, and Jeff Hempkin, baritone singer and piano player.    Refreshments were provided by EO and volunteers.
We celebrated birthdays for nine members: Dorothy Walters, Audri Holskotter, Christine Penny, Robert Wagner, Mary Woolsey, the Rev. Carl Rhodes, Randy Schukar, Shaundra Leidner and Richey Dailey. There were lots of smiles and cheers, but they had to admit, they are a year older! Yuck!
Rames gave the devotional prayer, and the Bible verse (Mathew 25:40) was read. This is the verse which inspired Rames to start Evergreen Outreach more than 30 years ago after a visit to England. What a wonderful contribution to the community and church. If you haven’t visited the United Methodist Church website, please do. There is a link to EO, with lots of details on the history and activities we do, so please visit us. There are two different pages, so please check them both out. Pictures may be coming soon!
Bob Culberson opened the entertainment with a song called “Jesus Knows” and “Child of the King.” He let Jeff join in by playing the piano (but he made him get rid of his gum, since he is not too good at multi-tasking). Ha! They sang and played a most unusual and very complicated version of “Jesus Loves Me.” We were the first audience for this newly created version!  Thank you. A series of gospel songs followed: “Walk By My Side,” “Through It All,” “Given Life to Me” and “Good Old Gospel Time,” which absolutely melted the music off the piano!  The last two songs were: “He Walked With Me” and “He Saw It All.” The last one is a favorite of mine, because the song writer asks if a crippled man who went to see Jesus had RUN by. The song writer then explains that, YES, the blind man who had been to see Jesus, SAW IT ALL! On that wonderful note, the music died down and everyone had to go back to work.
The pinochle players played two games,  with Rosemund Hobler and Peggy Lippold winning both over Shirley Locke and Mary Woolsey.
It was a beautiful fun day and a  special thanks goes out to the Fourgiven Quartet   for taking the time to write, set up, and sing for us.
Hope to see you all next week.
