Evergreen Outreach

By Mary Woolsey
What a gorgeous day! Seems it would be a day to plant flowers, but I’m told one must wait until Mother’s Day. Surely, we will not have frost or snow after such a beautiful March. The dandelions don’t wait!
David and Patricia Pence welcomed us with music. David said that since Palm Sunday will be this coming Sunday, and Easter will be the following Sunday, that their music would be related to the Easter season.
Some of their selections were: “All Glory, Laud and Honor,” “Just a Closer Walk with Thee,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “He Lives,” “The Joy of the Lord is My Strength” and “Amazing Grace.” Their music is very beautiful. Thank you, Pences, for sharing.
Cindy Hunter, our leader for the day, recognized the birthday people: Ronnie Hunter Schraer, Renee Elliott, Edna Jackson, Ken Conklin, Don Black and Ilene Sidwelt.
Cindy Hunter read some fascinating things written on old tombstones. Here are a couple. In England: “Remember me as you walk by. As you are now, so once was I. As I am now, so shall you be. Remember this and follow me.” To which someone replied by writing on the tombstone. “To follow you, I’ll not consent. Until I know which way you went.”
In England: “The children of Israel wanted bread, and the Lord sent them manna. Clark Wallace wanted a wife, and the devil sent him Anna.”
Cindy also made the good -tasting cookies today.
Aura Rutherford said she was a first-time guest, and she came with a group from FAYCO.
The Rev. Roger Grimmett said that in Luke 11, the disciples asked Jesus, “How should we pray?” Then Jesus told a story of a man who went to a friend at midnight and said, “Friend, lend me three loaves. I have a friend coming, and I have nothing to set before him.”
Even though the man was in bed and the door was closed, the man got up and gave him what was needed.
Jesus said, “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and you shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
Grimmett said that we often approach God as if he were Santa Claus. We ask for the wrong things. Our motive is wrong.
When we pray for someone, we must have perseverance. Keep praying; it may take years. God does not want us to give up. “If we, being evil, know how to give good gifts to our children, how much more shall our heavenly father give to those who ask.”
Grimmett chose II Cor. 5:17-21 to continue. “Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away, behold, all things are become new.”
God wants a relationship with us. Under the title, “When Born Again Doesn’t Fit,” Grimmett told a story of an evangelist who came to a small town and called a meeting.
An older African American asked, “What do you hope to accomplish?”
The evangelist said, “I want to have the whole town to be bom again.”
The old man said, “I have been treated like dirt all my life, and some called themselves Christians."
Grimmett said that our life has to show what "born again" means. “'Born again' means that we will be changed from the inside out." he said. "We should think about people who may be watching us. We should set a godly example."
Cindy Hunter mentioned a small girl who has a brain tumor. When asked what she wanted, the girl asked for prayer. Be persistent. God answers prayer.
At the first pinochle table, Ruth Ann Scott and Joyce Mueller won one game, while Shirley Locke and Edith Elliott didn't win any. At the second table, Wolf Schlicht and John Hunsley won three games, while Peggy Lippold and Flo Lange didn't win any.
Next Monday, Beulah Brown will be the leader, Joe Lawson will give the devotional, Pam Childers will be the pianist, and Joyce Mueller will be the writer. The Rev. Tom Farris from the First Church of God will have the special music.
See you at Wesley Hall!
