Cougars win MTC championship

The South Central High School baseball team won its 17th and final Midland Trail Conference Tournament last Friday night, dispatching previously-unbeaten Woodlawn, 10-9.

Shawn Meyer picked up his fifth win of the season after pitching 6 2/3 innings  and striking out eight. Luke Krajefska picked up the final out to earn the save.

The Cougars opened the game with a four-run first inning, and added three more in the third and fifth innings.

Cole Armstrong paced the offense, with a 3-for-5 effort, two doubles and two RBI. Senior Colby Bushue was also 3-for-5, with a double and an RBI.

Bret Pitts had two doubles, and Fischer Tharp drove home a run.

South Central, which will be joining the National Trail Conference next season, came into its final MTC Tournament as the No. 3 seed, and finished the season with a 15-5 record.

To get to the title game, South Central defeated second-seeded North Clay, 11-5, last Wednesday.

In that game, Krajefska earned the win in relief by pitching 5 2/3 innings and striking out six.

The game was tied at five entering the top of the seventh, but the Cougars scored six times in the that half inning to seal the win.

Six players had multi-hit games and at least one RBI.
