Brownstown-Sefton News

News from the Chicken Roost
One early morning last week, when Bill went out to feed the chickens, he found Rhonda Hen’s lifeless body.
There were no signs of foul play, such as a scuffle, feathers strewn about, etc.; it just appeared like she went naturally to the great chicken roost in the sky.
We felt sorry for Blackie, as this was the second “best friend” she had lost. The first, our readers may remember, was when Anita Chicken was grabbed by a red fox and carried away, right in front of Blackie’s eyes!
Blackie seemed to be depressed after that terrible, and that is why we brought Rhonda to the Homestead, and it seemed to help Blackie.
We thought she would be all right his time; however, as she still had Cogburn for company.
But, when Bill went out to let Blackie and Cogburn Rooster out of their house the next morning, he discovered Blackie was sitting on the woodpile! She had slept there all night, in danger of a varmint getting her! Somehow, she had flown (or climbed?) out of the pen the day before, and Bill hadn’t noticed she was not in their house on the roost that night.
She has never done that before, and we wondered if she was looking for Blackie.  Bill checked the roost that night before shutting the door and, again, Blackie was behaving out of her chicken character.
Always before, the chickens sat very close together on their roost at night. That night, Blackie was sitting on one end of the roost and Cogburn was on the other end.
The thought had never occurred to us that chickens would be upset over the loss of another chicken, but Blackie seems to be grieving the loss of Rhonda to the extent that she wants to be alone and not talk to anyone, including Cogburn Rooster.
Blackie just seems to have a difficult time coping with loss. We wonder if she is distancing herself from Cogburn because she is afraid of losing him, too. We don’t know how to help her through this. Does anyone know of good “chicken whisperer”?
Golden Years Building Update
It is looking more and more like the Golden Years members’ “home.” DeeDee Diveley, our vice president, called with the exciting news that the concrete for the sidewalks was being poured! Failing to reach me, she took pictures on her cell phone, which we appreciate.
