South Central wins third NTC game

The Cougars won their third National Trail Conference game of the season on Tuesday, defeating Dieterich, 11-1, in six innings.

Senior Dan Diss struck 11 to earn his second victory of the season, and senior Heath Hoffmann paced the offense, with a 3-for-4 effort, including four RBI.

South Central is 5-1 on the season and 3-0 in the NTC.

Eagles fall in close game with St. Anthony

Senior Connor Beasley struck out eight over six innings, but National Trail Conference rival St. Anthony’s pitching matched him pitch for pitch in the Bulldogs’ 2-1 win on Tuesday.

St. Elmo (2-2, 2-1 NTC) scored a run in the first on Dalton Parks’ RBI single, but St. Anthony scored a run in each the fifth and sixth innings to spoil Beasley’s stellar pitching performance.

Warriors defeat conference rival Ramsey

Patoka’s baseball team defeated Ramsey 8-1 in an Egyptian-Illini Conference game on Tuesday.

Patoka (4-1, 1-0 EIC) was led senior Jake Orrell, who was 2-for-4, with two doubles, and senior Quinn Wadkins, who picked up the victory from the mound.

Wadkins (1-1) struck out 11 over six innings, and Orrell struck out three more in the seventh.

Ramsey (1-3) was led by junior Tylor Knisley’s two doubles. Sophomore Waylon Davis (0-1) took the loss.

Brownstown falls to Carlyle

Playing a school a class up, the Brownstown volleyball team was unable to do much against Carlyle on Tuesday, falling, 25-13, 25-13.

Lady Cougars earn first NTC victory

South Central’s volleyball team got its first win in its new conference on Monday, defeating Neoga, 25-12, 25-6.

Playing in their first National Trail Conference game, the Lady Cougars got seven kills from Lincoln Brasel, 16 points from Riley Williams (including two aces) and 11 assists from Taylor Keen.

South Central hosts St. Elmo on Thursday in another NTC contest.

Cougars suffer first loss of season

South Central’s baseball team was handed its first loss of the fall on Monday, falling to former conference rival Webber, 9-3.

Dan Diss, Kyle Bray and Noah Powless each drove in a run against the former Midland Trail Conference foe, but five multi-hit games for Webber allowed it to score consistently throughout the contest.

Senior Shawn Meyer (1-1) took the loss, tossing a complete game and striking out three. He allowed seven earned runs on 14 hits and a walk.

Late surge gives Eagles double-conference win

St. Elmo scored four runs in each the fifth and sixth innings to rally from a 7-1 deficit to get a double-conference 9-7 win against Beecher City last Friday.

Junior Nick Bauer hit a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth to secure the National Trail Conference and Egyptian-Illini Conference victory for the Eagles (2-1, 2-0 NTC, 1-0 EIC).

Senior Connor Beasley earned the win in relief, striking out six over three innings of work and allowing just one hit.

Senior Ben Davis added a two-run double, and senior Garrett Bartels had St. Elmo’s only multi-hit game.

Freshman Malachi Maxey also doubled, bringing the Eagles’ total to four in three games.

Five multi-hit games help South Central beat Cisne

Five players had multi-hit games for South Central last Friday, as the Cougars defeated their old Midland Trail Conference rival, 13-6.

Sophomore Noah Powless led the offense, with a 3-for-5 day. He had a double and an RBI for the Cougars (4-0).

Junior Kyle Bray had four RBI on a 2-for-4 afternoon, and seniors Shawn Meyer and Fischer Tharp, and junior Dylan Smith each had two hits.

Powless (1-0) earned the victory, tossing five innings and striking out three. Meyer closed out the game, striking out four in the final two frames.

Powless homers as Cougars stay perfect in NTC

Sophomore Noah Powless hit his second home run in three games last Thursday to lift South Central to a National Trail Conference victory against Stew-Stras, 11-5

Powless’ three-run shot in the fifth opened up an 11-2 lead for the Cougars (3-0, 2-0 NTC). For the game, Powless was 2-for-3 with four RBI.

Senior Dan Diss (1-0) earned the victory, striking out four over seven innings of work. He scattered 12 hits and a walk to allow five earned runs.

Lady Bombers lose opening match

The Brownstown volleyball team fell in a tight National Trail Conference match last Thursday, losing the season-opener to Dieterich, 25-20, 17-25, 21-25.

Junior Bethany Oberlink led the Lady Bombers (0-1, 0-1 NTC) with five kills and four aces. Juniors Michaela Walk added seven assists, Courtney Howard added four kills and Dani Austin added one block.

Eagles shut out at North Clay

Senior Connor Beasley was 2-for-2 with a double, but that was all of the offense for St. Elmo last Thursday when the Eagles fell at North Clay, 10-0.

Dalton Parks (0-1) took the loss for St. Elmo (1-1), striking out one in two innings.

Bray shines in local rivalry game

South Central junior Kyle Bray struck out 11, and the Cougars used a four-run third inning to secure a 5-1 win against Patoka last Wednesday.

Bray (1-0) was dominant in his six innings of work, allowing one run in the first when junior Johnnie Clift tripled, but otherwise allowing just three other hits.

Seniors Shawn Meyer, Heath Hoffmann and Drake Ritter each had two hits for South Central (2-0), which had nine hits in the game.
