Anton J. Matzker, 95, Vandalia

Anton Joseph Matzker, 95, of Vandalia, died at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009, at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Joseph Havrilka officiating. Burial will be in Mother of Dolors Catholic Cemetery in Vandalia. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services at the church. Hohlt & File Funeral Home in Vandalia was in charge of arrangements. Memorials: Mother of Dolors Catholic Church or Fayette County Hospital Long Term Care.

Mr. Matzker was born on Nov. 20, 1913, in Shafter Township in Fayette County, the son of Albert Joseph and Catherine Thull Matzker. He married Mildred “Millie” Gudehus Matzker; she died on Aug. 16, 2005.

He was a farmer, a life member of Mother of Dolors Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council 4630, and was a former Grand Knight. He was a former member of the Vandalia Board of Education, Shafter Township Board of Trustees, Vandalia Mutual Board of Directors and University of Illinois Extension Board, served as a church usher at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church and was a member of the Mother of Dolors Building Committee.

He is survived by sons, Dean Matzker and his wife Genny of Vandalia, Leon Matzker of Ramsey, and Bill Matzker and his wife Cheryl of O’Fallon; daughters, Marie and her husband Keith Washburn of Springfield, Cathy Diveley of Springfield, and Rita and her husband Rick King of Springfield; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; sister, Josephine Flood; and one grandchild.
