The Vandalia boys golf champions reflected on a victorious and historic season while receiving varsity letters, among other awards
The Vandalia boy’s golf team was recognized at a team awards dinner on Thursday, Nov. 18. At the dinner, each golfer was recognized with comments from their coach–Kevin Schroeder, in front of friends and family. Individual and team accomplishments during the winning season were discussed, and historic team milestones were remembered and compared with past seasons.
Each of the golfers were given a team plaque that had the following team accomplishments: IHSA Class 1A State Champions, SCC Champions, Regional Champions, Hickory Stick Inv. 1st, Season Record 19-0.
After dinner, Schroeder also mentioned in a speech how much the season meant to him personally, mentioning how wonderfully the team came together, telling a bit of history as to how the team was assembled, talking about seeing the kids grow up and mentioning at one point that he was told he had a pretty good golfer coming to the team from California.
That new golfer actually did come to Vandalia, and his name is Dylan Halford. Schroeder also pleasantly added that Dylan was a pretty good golfer. Moving on, Schroeder also covered a list of impressive golf team statistics. This gave the parents, relatives, and players something to historic upon which they could reflect.
According to Schroeder, the regular season average for nine holes was 146.8. The Tournament average for eighteen holes was 312.8. When the regular season and tournaments were added together, the team was 132-10, and 47-7 against 2A and 3A teams.
Further into his speech, Schroeder brought up that three players earned All Conference, Vandalia had the medalist in 15 out of our 17 matches, and the teams 616 score at the State Finals was the best team score since 2008. “Since 1975-76 when the IHSA split into more than one class our 616 score at the State Finals is the thirteenth best small school golf score out of 453 small schools that have competed at the State Finals” Schroeder said. He also mentioned that Vandalia boy’s golf seniors that played four years have, “an overall regular season record of 74-7.”
