The Vandalia wrestling team earned top honors at the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association sectional meet in Lawrenceville, earning 151.5 points, with the closest team being 106.5 points.
Vandalia is ranked fourth in the IWCOA rankings. In the championship matches, Jarek Wehrle won 1-0 over Auburn’s Anthony Ruzic in the 106-pound weight class. Wehrle is ranked second in that class with the association. Eric McKinney earned a second at the sectional in the 145-pound class, losing by a technical fall at 2:55 in the final. Tiler Worker also earned a second, dropping in the 170-pound weight class to Pittsfield’s Mason Davis, 3-1. Earning thirds at the meet from Vandalia were Owen Miller, Cutter Prater, Logan Nance and Ryan Kaiser.
Gavin Mouser is also ranked second in the 285-pound class, Eric McKinney is ranked seventh in the 145-pounders, as is Tiler Worker in the 170-pound class, and Logan Nance is ranked eighth in the 138-pound weight class, all in the association’s state rankings.
All first through third placings for Vandalia qualifies for the state finals to be held Thursday, June 24 in Springfield.
