Jessica Carr Martin, of Belleville, is the new assistant state’s attorney for Fayette County, in leiu of the announcement of former Assistatnt State’s Attorney David Sternau taking a position, coincidentally, in Belleville.
Martin, a graduate of Okawville High School, received her Bachelor of Arts in Polictical Science, Legal Studies and Communications from the University of Illinois at Springfield. She then went on to get her law degree from St. Louis University of law, where she was graduated in May 2017. She passed her Bar, that November. The following January she started in traffic court in St. Clair County, after which she was transferred to juvenile court. She was in that position for two days, when she was again transferred to the felony gun docket, where she served until January of this year.
“I was taking a break; I contacted Josh (Morrison) after I heard about the job, and thought it something I would be interested in, and was called in for an interview,” she said.
Martin, a newlywed, married her elementary school friend, Caleb Martin, on December 12.
“We met in fourth grade and when he moved away, we stayed in contact over the phone. We started dating in 2020, and the rest, well …,” she explained.
She will be succeeding David Sternau, who has served as the Assistant State’s Attorney since October of 2019., Sternau is from the Belleville area, and is moving back to be closer to family, and started his new position as Assistant States Attorney in Cinton County on Monday.
