Lady Vandals split games with Gillespie, Neoga

The Vandalia High School girls’ team split a pair this past week on the hardwoods.

Vs. Gillespie

A poor second quarter was the Lady Vandal downfall Monday night, Mar. 1, as they fell to Gillespie, 42-30, on the Lady Miners’ home floor.

After trailing by just 4 at the end of the first, Vandalia could not get the offense going in the ensuing quarter, and trailed by 23-9 at the half. The Lady Vandals played it close in the third, and outpaced Gillespie in the fourth, but could not overcome that second quarter deficit..

Anna Forbes had a great game for the Lady Vandals as she put 16 points on the scoreboard, including ten of those in the third quarter. She also had three rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots. She was followed by Bailey Stewart with 7 points, 8 rebounds and two assists; Mady Hill with 5 five, 5 rebounds and two assists; and Katie Eckhardt with two points, two rebounds, three assists and three steals. Gracie Pruitt had 11 rebounds on the night.

The jayvee dropped their game 32-29, with Eckhardt tops for the night with 9 points, followed by Megan Lupton with 8; and Madison Berry with 7. Sadie Willenbord had 12 rebounds on the night.

Vs. Neoga

The game last Thursday, Feb. 25, was a different story against Neoga, as the Lady Vandals had an outstanding first half, and held on for the 61-54 finale.

The ladies jumped out by one in the first,  and the defense held the Lady Indians to just four points in the second, as Vandalia took a 34-18 advantage at the intermission. They held on despite a second half surge by the Indians.

Hill was game high scorer with 18; followed by Stewart with 14; Forbes, 13; Lupton with 9, and Eckhardt had 7.

The jayvee dropped the game, 45-28.
