Wanda LaDean Maxedon was born on April 26, 1937 in Allenville, the daughter of Emery D. and Irma G. (Spencer) Maxedon. She married Clifford B. Harris on Dec. 22, 1956, and together they shared 64 loving years of marriage.
In earlier years Wanda and Cliff ran Harris Radio/TV in Charleston. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Mason Point Retirement Center in Sullivan, and later was a homemaker, raising six children on the family farm in rural Vandalia.
Wanda was a Christian woman who was strong in her faith. She grew up attending the Church of God, and later in life, you would often find her praying, reading her Bible and memorizing scripture. She enjoyed the more traditional things in life, like gardening, canning and cooking for her family. She also liked watching the country music shows on RFD every Saturday night. She looked forward to the annual family reunion, where she would get to reminisce with relatives, and couldn’t wait for Mother’s Day every year so she could talk to all of her children on the same day. She was so proud of her six children – she would tell everyone she met about them, leaving a lasting impact of love in their lives, too. She was a caring mother and loving grandmother who will be greatly missed by many.
She is survived by her husband; sons, Douglas Harris and wife Clara of Auburn, Keith Harris and wife April of Greenup, Don Harris and wife Lisa of Flora, and Bill Harris of Effingham; daughters, Wanetta Harris and Michelle Harris of Vandalia; grandchildren, Austin “AJ” Harris, Clint Harris, Chad Harris, Ashley Bryant, Ashley Harris Bell, Jacob Harris and Jessica Harris; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Leatitia and husband Elvin Elder of Sullivan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
