Golfers win St. Anthony tourney

Topping a field of eight teams, including several from large schools, the Vandalia boys golf team won the inaugural Effingham St. Anthony Match Play Tournament.

The Vandals won seven matches and tied in the eighth to accumulate 7.5 points, finishing one point ahead of second-place Mattoon.
Other teams scores for the tournament, held at the Effingham Country Club, were: Charleston, 5.5; St. Anthony, 5; Oblong, 3.5; Paris, 3; Teutopolis, 1; and Effingham, 0.
The match results are:
• No. 1 singles – Chase Laack (V) defeated Pierson Smith of Charleston, 2 up with 1 to play; and Luke Bradley of Paris, 2 and 1.
• No. 2 singles – Connor McCall (V) defeated Hayden Jansen of Teutopolis, 5 up with 3 holes to play; and Stewart Druin of Mattoon, 2 up.
• No.1 doubles – Riley Ruckman and Jacob Schaal (V) defeated Lane Ludwig and Aiden Tegler of St. Anthony, 4 up with 2 holes to play; and Ryker Schneider and Ethan Ritz of Effingham, 3 and 2.
• No. 2 doubles – Dylan Halford and Jonah Beesley (V) tied Hayden Johnson and Joe Pugh of Oblong; and defeated Michael Martelli and Charlie Wegman of St. Anthony, 2 and 1.
