A Springfield man was airlifted to a regional hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after a one-car accident on U.S. Route 51 on Monday afternoon.
The Illinois State Police said that Patton Siewart, 18, was traveling north on Route 51 when he looked away from the road to check his GPS and ran off the right side of the road, at the St. Peter blacktop.
Siewart’s vehicle, a 2010 Nissan Altima, struck a culvert, crossed the blacktop and overturned. Siewart has been cited for improper lane usage.
Responding to the accident were the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department and RuralMed.
Last Friday evening, the state police handled a one-vehicle accident on Ill. Route 185 at County Road 1150 North at 8:30 p.m.
The state police said that three individuals were airlifted from the scene with non-life-threatening injuries – Kanen Finkey, 19, of Effingham; Robert Lowrance, 18, of Teutopolis; and a 15-year-old Effingham male.
The ISP said that a Farina police office attempted to stop a 1997 Toyota for a traffic violation on Interstate 57 near exit 135. They said the driver of the vehicle failed to stop and fled from the officer.
According to the ISP, the vehicle was traveling north on Ill. Route 185 near County Road 1150 North at a high rate of speed with the driver lost control negotiating a curve.
According to the ISP, the vehicle left the roadway to the right and overturned, with two of the occupants being ejected.
An ISP Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit responded to assist in the investigation.
At the time of the accident, the state police said, it was unclear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the crash.
