Peaceful Protest

Between 100 and 125 local residents participated in a peaceful march and protest against police brutality and racial inequity on Sunday afternoon in downtown Vandalia. Participants marched from the Vandalia Statehouse to the Fayette County Courthouse parking lot, where Brittany Kelley led in the singing of ‘Amazing Grace’ and participants kneeled in silence for more than eight minutes in memory of George Floyd, who died after a Minneapolis, Minn., police officer kneeled on his neck for that period of time. Kelley said, ‘I teach about 22 5-year-olds a day and I just couldn’t stand myself showing my students to be silent about such injustice.’ She participated in the event ‘because of some of the comments that a lot of people in this town have made, and this is just a small thing that we could do to help it.’
