Vicky Conder has submitted her resignation as Fayette County clerk and recorder, effective on Tuesday of this week.
By statute, the chief deputy serves as the interim Fayette County clerk/recorder until a replacement is appointed.
Therefore, Jessica Barker will have the full authority of the elected office until such time as a new county clerk/recorder is sworn in.
State statues state: The principal clerk shall in all cases be responsible for the acts of the principal clerk’s deputies. Whenever a vacancy occurs in the office of the county clerk in any county, including counties with a population of less than 60,000 inhabitants, the chief deputy clerk shall perform all the duties appertaining to the office of county clerk until the successor of such clerk is elected or appointed and qualified as provided in Section 3-2011.

The replacement of a clerk/recorder vacancy has two steps.
First, the incumbent party submits a nominee to the chairman in advance of the next county board meeting.
Next, the board has up to 60 days to appoint a replacement.
About her resignation, Conder said, “It is with great regret that due to health reasons I have tendered my resignation as of March 31.
“I have enjoyed my tenure as the county clerk, and have wonderful relationships with all department heads, the county board and the citizens of Fayette County,” Conder said.
Conder was elected county clerk and recorder in 2014 and re-elected to a second four-year term in 2108.
That post is up for election again in 2022.
