New Vandalia school athletic policy on vaping, Juuling

Juul – Vaping  – liquid nicotine: Use or possession of Juul, vaping, liquid nicotine as described in the
Extracurricular Handbook and student Handbook at any time during the school year on a 24-hour basis and during the summer will result in:
First Offense:
1. Regular disciplinary actions of the district (if applicable).
2. The student shall be suspended from participation in extracurricular activities for the remainder of the season.
3. A meeting shall be held with the concerned parties including the athletic director, the parents/guardians, and the student. The student is expected to attend any practice or events until the parent conference has been held but may not participate in contests.
4. The student may be offered the option of returning to the extracurricular program after one week (from date of infraction) of interscholastic competition if he/she agrees to undergo a screening process and to follow in a meaningful way all terms, conditions, and recommendations set forth by the screening process.
5. If the student at any time fails to follow the recommendations of the screening process he/she shall be required to serve the season suspension from participation in extracurricular activities from the date the screening process was broken.
6. If the infraction incurs out of season, the appropriate disciplinary action will be administered at the start of the next extracurricular activity in which the student participates.
Screening Process: If a Juul/vape violation occurs, the participant must take a nicotine test at their own expense, every other week when the school administers their random drug testing. In the case of a Juul/vape violation, the extracurricular participant must test negative before they will be allowed to participate. The screening process will last the length of the end of season suspension.
An extracurricular participant who has been offered the option of returning to the team shall not participate in a minimum of 1 game if it has not been served already during the one week suspension.
Second Offense (a second offense in one which occurs within five years of the first offense.)
1. Regular disciplinary action of the district (if applicable)
2. The participant shall be suspended from participation in extracurricular activities for the remainder of the season.
3. If the infraction incurs out of season, the appropriate disciplinary action will be administered at the start of the next extracurricular activity in which the student participates.
Third Offense (a third offense is one which occurs within five years of the second offense.)
1. Regular disciplinary actions of the district (if applicable)
2. The extracurricular participant shall not be allowed to participate in any extracurricular activities for one calendar year. The suspension covers a period of twelve (12) months from the date of the infraction.
