Cougars score nine late to top Vandals

South Central scored nine times in the final three innings to defeat Vandalia, 9-5, last Wednesday at Vandalia Mutual Field.

Garett McNary and Mitchell Casey singled and scored on singles, and Marcus Isaiah singled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball to give the Vandals a 3-0 lead after two innings.
Vandalia added a run in the fourth when Mitchell Casey walked, advanced to second on a bunt by Matthew Wells and scored on a single by Isaiah.
McNary scored Vandalia’s final run in the sixth, reaching when hit by a pitch, advancing to second on a fielder’s choice, moving to third when Isaiah was hit by a pitch and scoring on Tim Ritchey’s single.
South Central started its late inning rally with three runs in the fifth inning.
Logan Lotz doubled to left field, moved to thire on a single by Trent Geiler and scored on an error. Geiler was on third via an error and scored on a single by Ryan Matheny.
Matheny advanced on a ground out and scored on a single by Cauy Blomberg.
Lotz and Geiler opened the sixth with singles, and they advanced on an error. Lotz scored on a fielder’s choice by Hunter Brandt, and Geiler crossed the plate on a single by Ryan McCown.
Brandt moved around on singles by McCown and Blomberg, and Brandt and McCown both scored on an error.
In the seventh inning, Brandt reached on a walk and advanced to second on a walk to Matheny. Brandt scored on a double by Brandt, and Matheny scored the Cougars’ final run on a error.
Lotz got the win for South Central, allowing five runs, three earned. He allowed five hits, struck out two and walked two.
Matheny gave up one hit, struck out two and walked two in the seventh inning.
Kyle Guffey took the loss for Vandalia, giving up three earned runs and seven hits while striking out one and walking four. Garett Austin gave up five runs (three earned), gave up four hits and walked one in 1 2/3 innings and Nolan While surrendered one run, gave up one hit and walked one in 2/3 of an inning.
