Vandals face 9-0 Fairfield in postseason play

A high-powered offense meets a stingy defense – that’s the scenario for the Vandals’ playoff game this Saturday at 2 p.m. in Fairfield.
Finishing the year with a 6-3 record, the Vandals were designated a No. 15 seed in the southern bracket of the IHSA Class 3A playoffs.
Their first round opponent is No. 2 seed Fairfield, which finished the regular season undefeated at 9-0.
The Vandals have put 433 points on the board this fall – including individual game scores of 76, 58, 55 and 55 – and have allowed their opponents a total of 254 points.
Vandalia gained 4,052 yards this year, 2,285 on the ground and 1,667 in the air.
Trevor Smalls has led the Vandals in rushing with 1,558 yards on 156 carries and 23 touchdowns.
Quarterback Matthew Wells was second with 264 yards on 50 carries and five touchdowns.
Wells completed 82 of 139 passes for 1,667 yards with 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Marcus Zimmerman has led all Vandals receivers with 1,020 yards on 36 catches and 13 touchdowns.
Blake Morrison had 15 catches for a total of 231 yards and four touchdowns.
On defense, Garett McNary has led the Vandals with 60 solo tackles, 23 assisted tackles, 14 tackles for a loss, one interception and one sack.
Chandler Boyd had 54 solo tackles, 23 assisted tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and eight tackles for a loss.
Fairfield recorded six shutouts in nine games, finishing with a scoring total of 350 points. The three teams that did score on the Mules contributed to a total of just 36 points.
The winner of Saturday’s playoff contest will face off the following week with the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 7 seed Sesser-Valier (8-1) and No. 10 seed Greenville (7-2), being played at 1 p.m. this Saturday at Sesser-Valier.
