The Vandalia Board of Education approved on Tuesday an initial step in making some needed improvements to the district’s high school and administration building. The board approved a resolution allowing health life safety monies to be used for three projects. Those include replacing steel lintels on the north side of the high school, replacing a portion of the brick exterior and tuckpointing various areas on the north and east sides of the high school. Also to be done is the replacement of the stone cap at the parapet with a new metal cap. That work is needed because mortar joints have failed, allowing water to seep into the building and cause plaster in exterior walls to deteriorate. The health life safety work also includes replacing existing shingles on the mansard roof at the administration portion of the building with metal panels. Passage of the resolution allows the district to proceed with the process of drawing specifications and seeking bids for the work. Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the board handled a number of personal issues: • Approved two retirements effective on June 30, 2019 – Transportation Director Mike Critcheloe and bus driver Susie Collier. • Approved the employment of three junior high volunteer coaches, Nick Casey for baseball, and Nathan Miller and Zac Kopp for softball. • Approved tenure status for fourth-year teachers Joey Daniken at the high school and Michael Hawks at Okaw Area Vocational Center. • Approved the rehiring of the following first-, second- and third-year teachers – Emily Dees, Kari Hagy, Erin Langston, Tammy McKinney, Melanie Schuette, Carrie Whitten, Rachel Willenborg, Nicole Detmer, Thomas Fulton, John Hall, Justin Harrison, Derek Jones, Joe Kelly, Cheri Lux, Eric Lux, Shelli Meyers, Rachel Miller, Tracy Nickel, Jenna Rich, Katie Myers, Kristina Buehne, Keri Buscher, Jason Collingwood, Toby Dothager, Kiersten Johnson, Claire Schaal and Mandy Totten. Also at the meeting: • The board accepted the bid of Whitten Mowing Services, $450 per mow. • The board amended the school calendar, with the last student day now being May 19. • The board renewed the membership in the Illinois High School Association.
