Three alumni worthy of tribute

If they take advantage of it, the education that students can acquire in Vandalia's schools can take them far – the recipients of the Vandalia Alumni and Friends Foundation are proof of that.
This Saturday, the foundation will honor Robert E. Chandler, Tim Merriman and Jim Staff.
Chandler has completed a successful career in the auto industry, Merriman is well-known for his work and Staff has served his hometown as a leader in both the field of education and in community service.
Those three men, like the three men who were the charter recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award, are proof that the educational foundation provided in the Vandalia School District is a solid one, something that our students can use to make a difference, whether it be locally, at the state level, nationally or globally.
We join the foundation in recognizing this year's recipients, and like the members of the foundation, hope that today's students can see what kinds of things they can accomplish in the future, accomplishments that are possible by a lifetime of hard work, dedication and perseverance.
We also applaud the foundation members for initiating the program to remember and honor those products of the local school system. The Distinguished Alumni Award program is a wonderful way to also promote the value of our schools.
