South Central Volleyball
The Lady Cougars defeated North Clay, 23-25, 25-19, 25-7, last Thursday evening to improve its overall record to 15-2 for the season.
Leading South Central were Deidra Schaal, who had team-high 13 kills along with four digs, and Kendal Burleyson, who had a team-high 21 assists and seven aces, as well as two kills and three digs.
Hannah Rubin finished with three aces, eight kills and three digs, Abbey Garrett finished with seven kills, three stuffs and one ace, and Emily Chapman had nine kills and 20 assists.
A week after finishing first at the Vandalia Volleyball Tournament, the Lady Cougars were able to secure a fourth-place finish at the Herrin Volleyball Tournament.
South Central went undefeated in pool play, defeating Carterville 28-29, 25-20, 15-20; Steelville 25-14, 25-20; and finishing off with a 25-20, 25-12 win versus Galatia.
Despite the strong pool play, South Central could not win in the trophy round. The Lady Cougars dropped their first match versus New Athens, 25-21, 9-25, 6-15.
In the third-place game, South Central fell to Marion, 18-25, 25-21, 10-15, earning a fourth-place finish overall. Emily Chapman was selected for the All-Tournament Team, finishing the tournament tied for a team high in kills with 25.

St. Elmo/Brownstown Volleyball
St. Elmo/Brownstown defeated Neoga, 25-16, 25-22, at home last Thursday evening.
Gabbi Moore had a team-high eight kills along with five digs, Sarah Maxey had a team-high 16 assists, one ace and nine digs.
Emily Bone had five digs, Madison Carson had one kill, one ace and a team-high 11 digs. Tessa Philpot finished with two kills and six digs as well.
SEB won at Patoka Monday evening, 25-15, 25-16 to improve its Egyptian-Illini Conference record to a perfect 4-0.

The Vandalia High School freshman football improved to 2-0 with a 46-38 win over Carlinville last Thursday evening.
The Vandals used a steady rushing attack, piling up 320 yards on the ground. Trevor Smalls led the offense, finishing with 185 yards rushing and 120 yards passing for a combined three touchdowns and two two-point conversions.
Tanner Swain added 75 yards on the ground for two touchdowns, while Blake Barth had one receiving touchdown, one rushing touchdown and an interception on defense. Devon Little hauled in two of the three completions in the game for 90 yards with one score.
The freshman squad will look to keep its perfect record alive against Pana on Oct. 15.
The Junior Varsity Vandals improved to 5-0 with a 38-12 win over Litchfield Monday evening.
Trevor Smalls had a team-high 170 yards rushing along with a passing touchdown. Tanner Swain gained 45 yards on the ground for two scores as well.
James Taylor rounded out the rushing attack with 73 yards and a score, while Cole Phillips caught the lone touchdown pass of the game.
The JV squad will look to improve to 6-0 this Monday versus Hillsboro, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Vandalia Soccer team lost 9-2 at Altamont Friday afternoon. Boaz Haveman scored both goals, with Nic Wollerman and Tyler Sutton providing assists. Goalkeeper Josiah Yexley finished the contest with 19 saves.
The Vandals fell to Carlinville 9-0 Saturday morning. Yexley finished with 13 saves.
The Vandals moved to 2-11 on the season, losing to Carlyle, 7-1, Monday afternoon. Wollerman scored the lone goal and Yexley finished with 10 saves.
The Vandals finished third at the South Central Conference Boys Golf Tournament at The Rail golf course in Springfield Monday afternoon. They finished with a team score of 371, falling to Pana and Greenville who shot 362 and 350, respectively.
Alec Schroeder placed sixth with an individual score of 86. Other Vandal scorers were Levi Cox with a 94, Scott Shulman with a 95 and Bryce Dunn with a 96.

South Central Middle School Softball
The Lady Falcons season came to an end Friday, losing to Albion 10-3 in the school's first ever appearance at the Regional Championship. South Central fell to a quick 4-1 deficit that it would not be able to overcome. Falcons head coach Gary Kapper was proud of how his team had performed all season despite falling just short of a regional championship.
"These girls worked hard all year to imporve. They were 3-10 last year and this year went 13-3. They represented our team, school and community very well," Kapper said.
Sydnee Garrett picked up the loss in a complete game effort, giving up 10 runs on five hits while striking out nine and walking six.

The Seventh-Grade Lady Vandals lost to Altamont, 28-19, in the championship game of the Old Capital Classic Tournament. The loss brings their record to 2-1.
Bradley Stewart lead all Vandals' scorers with 11 points. Morgan Lidy also scored six.
