There’s still a big festival

We won't have the period crafts, food and music that we've grown to be accustomed to during our community's largest annual festival. But this weekend still offers a lot for both Vandalia residents and visitors.
State cuts have resulted in the cancellation of this year's Grande Levée, but a festival that has been held in conjunction with the period celebration continues.
This Friday night and Saturday, downtown Vandalia will be full of activities during the Vandalia Tourism Commission's Harvest Festival. Running in conjunction with this year's festival is the Family Fun Fest sponsored by the Shoal Creek Chapter of ABATE.
The weekend kicks off with a ham and beans dinner on Friday evening held by the Vandalia Ministerial Alliance, from 5-7 p.m. on the Vandalia Statehouse lawn.
On Saturday, the Harvest Festival and Family Fun Fest offer a variety of activities downtown, including the ABATE Bike Show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., kids' games, Little Miss and Mister Harvest Festival Pageant at 11 a.m. and Talent Showcase at 2 p.m.
While we'll miss seeing the talents period craftsmen, musicians and cooks that we've come to expect, this weekend still provides plenty of reasons to make it downtown.
