The Walls Came Tumbling Down

The last remaining walls of the three buildings at the southwest corner of Fifth and Gallatin streets in Vandalia that in August were deemed unsafe came tumbling down on Wednesday morning.

The first photo, provided by Randy Edwards, shows the east and south walls falling on Tuesday afternoon. The second photo, shot by Leader-Union Editor Rich Bauer, one of the remaining front walls is torn down. Razmus Demolition Services of Chrisman is handling the demolition of the buildings at 501, 503 and 507 W. Gallatin St. The project, which includes cleanup of the debris was estimated to take up to 60 days. Several videos of the demolition work on Tuesday and Wednesday are available on The Leader-Union's page on Facebook.
