Harvest Festival improved

While one major part of Vandalia’s fall festival has been dropped from the schedule, another popular event is taking its place.
And, a new attraction is being added to the festival schedule.
Due to cutbacks, the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is not holding the Grande Levée this fall.
In recent years, the Grande Levée – a celebration featuring period crafts, art and music – has been held in conjunction with the Vandalia Tourism Commission’s Harvest Festival.
The Harvest Festival returns, on Sept. 25-26, and running in conjunction with the festival is the ABATE Motorcycle Show. The ABATE event was scheduled to be held this spring, but was canceled due to inclement weather.
The Harvest Festival gets under way with a ham and beans dinner offered by the Vandalia Ministerial Alliance and musical entertainment on the evening of Friday, Sept. 25.
It starts back up at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the motorcycle show, various kids’ activities and a number of food vendors.
Returning to the Harvest Festival is the Little Miss and Little Mister Harvest Festival Pageant. Area residents interested in entering their children in the pageants should contact Teresa Powell, 283-1816.
A new activity on the schedule is a talent show being held by the Tourism Commission. The talent show will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Fourth and Gallatin streets, with the First United Methodist Church being an alternative site in case of bad weather.
The talent show will feature a junior division for entrants age 14 and under, and a senior division for those age 15 and over.
The entry fee is $20, and entry forms and the fee must be received at Vandalia City Hall by 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18. Entry forms are available at city hall and on the city’s website, www.vandaliaillinois.com.
Acts will be limited to five minutes, and prior approval is required for all acts. Entrants must provide their own music and instruments. Lip synching, comedy acts and bands are not allowed.
The top three places in each division will receive cash prizes – $100 for first, $50 for second and $25 for third.
