Remember those who gave all

This is the weekend that many will be holding cookouts, parties and other activities to celebrate the unofficial start of summer. It's a time when family and friends gather together for a good time.
But we ask that you also remember those who gathered together for quite a different reason more than 100 years ago or about 70 years ago … and many times in between and after. Those men and women joined together at various times in our country's history to preserve the freedoms that we enjoy today.
Memorial Day is a time to remember those men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country.  And while that's the reason for this holiday, it's also a good time to remember, honor and pray for those who are currently serving in our armed forces.
The upcoming three-day weekend will give you plenty of free time for enjoyable activities. So, how about giving up a little of that time to take in one of the Memorial Day services.
The Brownstown VFW Post is holding its annual service in the village park at 11 a.m., and the St. Elmo American Legion's service is at 1:30 p.m. at the Phillips Building. In between, there's the Walk Across America in downtown Vandalia at 1 p.m.
We have the freedom to gather because of the sacrifices of many of our men and women – how about gathering to honor them.
