Cougars edge Altamont in season opener

South Central held a 7-2 lead going into the seventh inning, then held on to edge Altamont, 7-6, in high school baseball on Tuesday at Altamont.
Noah Powless got the win for South Central in the Cougars' opener, giving up four runs and four hits while striking out two over the final three innings. He pitched in relief of Dylen Peters, who allowed two runs on three hits and a walk while striking out four.
Dylan Smith led the Cougars offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and a solo home run in the first inning. Trent Geiler also went 2-for-3, and Trevor Markley, Powless and Jace Wilkins each had one hit.
