Fatality on rail tracks believed to be a suicide


The death of a Vandalia man who was struck by a train on Sunday afternoon is believed to be a suicide.

According to Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen and Vandalia Police Chief Jeff Ray, authorities were called to the Eighth Street crossing shortly after 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Bowen said the man struck by a westbound freight train has been identified as David Waltz, 71. He said that Waltz was struck as he stood in the tracks.

Bowen pronounced Waltz dead at 4:11 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to Bowen and the VPD, those responding to the fatality were the Illinois State Police, Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department and CSX Railroad police.

The incident is still under investigation by Bowen, VPD and railroad police.
