Vandalia Memories

Sherry Smith-Stanford posted on Vandalia Memories this photo from Vandalia Remembered, printed during Vandalia's 175th anniversary.

The photo, which was taken in the mid-1910s, shows Hausmann Corner, the northwest corner of Fourth and Gallatin streets. In Vandalia's capital days, that corner housed Charter's Hotel, an inn used by state legislators, including Abraham Lincoln. In the background of the photo at right is the cupola that sat atop the Masonic building on Fourth Street.
