Late 3-pointer beats Vandals

Josh Franke’s three-pointer from the top of the key with 7.3 seconds left on the clock gave visiting Staunton a win over the Vandals last Friday night.

Franke’s basket broke a 58-58 tie, and Staunton added a basket at the end after Vandalia’s attempt to again knot the game failed.
Cold shooting in the second and third quarters made the difference for the Vandals, who held a 24-17 lead after one quarter.
In that opening quarter, Collin Nestleroad, Nathan Casey and Richie Well each had six points, with Casey and Well canning two three-pointers each.
After being outscored 14-9 and 20-8 in the second and third quarters, respectively, the Vandals made a run at Staunton in the final quarter, with Nestleroad scoring 10 of his game-high 21 points.
Vandals coach Brian Buscher said that his team’s shooting in the middle stanzas really hurt.
“We struggled to get it in the hole,” he said. “It’s not that we didn’t get the shots; we just didn’t shot well.”
Also, he said, the Vandals didn’t do a good job of pulling down defensive rebounds.
“Their offensive rebounds killed us.
"That’s what we’ve been working on, and against Pana and Litchfield we did that tremendously well. That hurt us tonight.
“We had our chances, but they had one or two possessions that just killed us,” Buscher said.
