With four champs, Vandals take second at Litchfield

LITCHFIELD — With four individuals champions and eight total medalists, the Vandalia Vandals finished second in the final team standings at the 2015 Rich Lovellette Panther Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.
Lena-Winslow won the team title with 213.5 points. Vandalia was second (165), Auburn was third (163), with Murphsyboro (161) and Orion (144) fourth and fifth, respectively. Other top 10 teams were West Frankfort, Litchfield, MICDS, Roxana and Harrisburg.
Other teams in the field were Mt. Olive, Pinckneyville, Carlyle, Carlinville, Alton Marquette, Hillsboro, Carrollton and Anna-Jonesboro.
Vandalia had four individual champions — Jarrett Paslay, Chaston Womack, Ryne Lipsey and Bobby Bradley.
The Vandals had four other medalists — Luke Tessman, Adam Palmer, Jake Stewart and Kendrick Woolsey.
It was a stellar finish to the regular season for the Vandals, who are still missing some key athletes due to injuries.
Paslay took first place at 113 pounds.
After a bye in the first round, Paslay defeated Zach Tippett of Lena-Winslow, 10-1. Paslay earned a 3-0 decision over Steven Bastian of Murphysboro in the semifinals. Paslay defeated Noah Mayes of Auburn, 3-1, in the title match.
A junior, Womack won the title at 120.
Womack had a bye in the first round. He then won by fall over Darren Odell of Harrisburg in 3:17. In the semifinals, Womack earned a 5-1 decision over Jamie Archie of MICDS. Womack pinned Orion's Evan Johnson in 1:04 in the championship match.
Lipsey was the champion at 126.
A senior, Lipsey also had a first round bye. Lipsey pinned Alijah Roman of West Frankfort in 1:43. Lipsey advanced to the title match with a 17-6 major decision over Brady Dambacher of Auburn. Lipsey beat Arieh Hart of Murphysboro, 8-4, in the title match.
At 132, Tessman finished fifth.
Tessman defeated Kyle Twitty of Hillsboro, 7-0, in the first round. Tessman then lost to Rahveon Valentine of Lena-Winslow. Tessman defeated Mauricus Simmons of Murphysboro, 7-0. Tessman then beat Tyler Sullivan of Harrisburg, 5-2. Tessman won by fall over Austin Lopez of Auburn in the fifth-place match.
Cody Phillips was unable to place at 138.
Phillips won by fall over Tristen Newman of Murphysboro, but then lost to Victor Kalaher of Litchfield. Phillips pinned Logan Jerolds of Anna-Jonesboro, but then lost to Lee Welch of Mt. Olive, 15-4.
Palmer finished fifth at 145.
Palmer won by fall over Mitchell Law of Hillsboro and then lost by fall to Litchfield's Doug Carlile. Palmer pinned Gaven Gunter of West Frankfort and Tanner Gray of Roxana. For fifth, Palmer earned an 8-7 decision over Jonny Danah of Mt. Olive.
Stewart won the third-place match at 182.
Stewart had a bye, and then pinned Noah Holmes of Lena-Winslow. Richard Jones of Pinckneyville defeated Stewart, 7-3, in the semifinals.
For third, Stewart defeated Luke Curtis of Roxana, 5-2.
A junior, Bradley won the bracket at 195.
Bradley had a bye and then earned an 8-2 decision over Dehen Mulrooney of Murphysboro. Bradley earned a major decision, 11-0, over Jake McDonald of Auburn in the semifinals. In the title bout, Bradley defeated Lucian Hicks of Harrisburg, 12-10.
Woolsey finished fourth at 220.
Woolsey won by fall over JP Painter of Auburn, and then beat Carlyle's Brendan Pfister, 4-0. Cole Werner of Litchfield defeated Woolsey, 10-4, in the semifinals. In the third-place match, Brett Nyswonger of Roxana won by fall over Woolsey.
At heavyweight, Gabe Valencia was unable to place.
Travis Hancock of Litchfield won by fall over Valencia. Gabe Mariner of Auburn then defeated Valencia.
Vandalia did not have an entry at 106, 152, 160 and 170.
The tourney was the final date on the schedule before this weekend's regional tournament at Lawrenceville.
