Vandals suffer tough loss to Okawville

OKAWVILLE —After a disappointing loss to start the Okawville Invitational, the Vandalia Vandals were looking to bounce back in a big way.
It didn't happen.
Host Okawville blew out Vandalia, 79-49, on Wednesday night.
The Vandals suffered a lopsided loss to Madison on the opening night of the tourney. And one night later, it was more of the same, as the Vandals didn't get enough defensive stops and couldn't get much going offensively.
Vandalia Coach Brian Buscher said his team played better than it did one night earlier, but simply ran into a solid team.
Okawville improved to 11-8.
Richie Well scored 12 points to lead Vandalia, while Drake Dokey added 11 and Collin Nestleroad had 10.
Noah Frederking scored 21 points for the Rockets, while Nick Strubhart added 18.
The Rockets were up 10-9 after an early feeling out process. The hosts then went on a 10-2 run late in the first quarter for a 20-11 lead.
Vandalia had three early turnovers in the second period, and Okawville scored the first nine points of the quarter for a comfortable 31-14 lead.
The Vandals looked out of sync offensively in the period, and Coach Buscher took two timeouts to try to stop the slide.
Okawville held a 35-18 lead at the half, as the Vandals managed only four points the entire second quarter. Vandalia had 15 turnovers in the first half.
After a 10-0 spurt, the Rockets pushed their lead to 27 points right away in the third quarter at 45-18. DuFaux and Nestleroad scored for the Vandals, but a dunk by Frederking and a trey from Brad Fuhrhop gave Okawville a 54-25 lead with just under three minutes to play in the quarter.
Okawville pushed its lead to 30 points late in the period, and there was no miracle comeback late.
