It’s time to voice opinions on rail issues

At a meeting next Monday night, Vandalia aldermen will be presented with some options designed to improve rail crossing safety in the community. It's a meeting that others in Vandalia may want to attend.
Options to be presented include closing Main Street from Fifth Street to Eighth Street, and limiting Fifth and Sixth streets to one-way traffic between Gallatin and Randolph streets.
The proposals have been drafted as a result of the car-train accident last October that resulted in the deaths of four members of a Greenville family, as well as other accidents at the two crossings in past years.
Implementation of one or both of these options would result in major traffic flow changes for our downtown area, so we need to be informed about and voice our opinions on the proposals.
We may hear that government entities can mandate any changes, regardless of our wishes, but they at least need to hear what our opinions are before making any final decisions.
Monday night, at 5:30 p.m. at city hall, is the time to let our voices be heard.
