Lady Vandals winning streak reaches five

EFFINGHAM — An  11-0  spurt in the fourth quarter propelled the Vandalia Lady Vandals to a 49-42 win over Greenville on Monday night in the first game of the  Effingham Round Robin Girls Basketball Tournament.
The Lady Vandals trailed by one early in the fourth quarter before they got going in a big way. Vandalia's girls scored 11 unanswered points to take control of the game.
"Our defense picked it up a little bit," Vandalia Coach Michelle McNary said. "We were flat in the first half. We didn't look like we were ready to play. But our defense picked it up, and that was the key."
The Lady Vandals improved to 11-9. That's not all. Monday's win was Vandalia's fourth-straight.
"We've won four in a row and we need to keep it going," McNary said. "I think we're playing pretty well."
Junior forward Makayla Tinker scored 17 points and had five assists to lead the Lady Vandals. Sophomore Emma Meyer added 13 points and nine rebounds, and junior Madelyn Hosick had 11 points.
Both teams got off to sluggish starts, but Greenville used a 9-0 run to take an 11-8 lead by the end of the first period. One thing that hurt the Lady Vandals in the first period was the fact that Meyer picked up two early fouls and had to go to the bench.
"Emma getting two fouls hurt us," McNary said. "But once I put her back in, it settled us down a little bit."
Meyer returned to the floor in the second period, and the Vandals went on an 11-2 run to pull ahead at 19-13.

Meyer scored nine of those 11 points.  Vandalia took a 21-18 lead into halftime.
Greenville outscored Vandalia, 10-8, in the third period, and the Lady Vandals held a slim, 29-28 lead entering the fourth quarter.
"The girls got a little rattled because the game got real physical," McNary said. "But they eventually settled down."
Greenville took the lead right away in the final frame, but the Lady Vandals then picked up the defensive intensity, got some quality looks in the lane and pulled away with an 11-0 run.
Tinker scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, making four late free throws that sealed the win.
"Makayla stepped up huge in the fourth quarter," McNary said.  "And she wasn't feeling well today. I told her she just had to suck it up. She started taking it to the hole and got some easy looks. And she made her free throws at the end."
