Despite scoring drought, Bulldogs take third place

The St. Anthony Bulldogs went nearly the entire fourth quarter without a point.
And they still won.
St. Anthony held on late for a 44-35 win over Altamont on Tuesday night in the third-place game of the 43rd Annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament.
Clinging to a slim lead, and watching Altamont make one last push, the Bulldogs went minute after minute of the final frame without scoring.
St. Anthony finally stopped its long scoring drought with only 24 seconds left in the game, as Zach Gardewine made two free throws that sealed the win for the Bulldogs.
After winning the tourney last year, the Bulldogs settled for third this year.
Andrew Gardewine scored 11 and Kyle Hartke had 10 for St. Anthony's balanced attack. Eight players scored in the game for the Bulldogs.
Ryan Armstrong led Altamont with 14 points and Adam Mayhaus added 13.
St. Anthony ran out to a 12-2 lead early in the game, getting mostly layups. Altamont was cold from the perimeter throughout the first half.
Altamont made a push in the second period, cutting St. Anthony's lead to 17-12. By the break, it was 23-12.
The Bulldogs pulled away at 37-23 in the third period. Hartke hit a three, but Mayhaus answered on the other end, and St. Anthony had a comfortable 42-26 lead at the end of the third period.
St. Anthony went nearly the entire fourth period without a point, and Altamont just kept coming. The Indians got a three from Armstrong that cut their deficit to 42-35. Altamont had some missed opportunities late, and St. Anthony held on for the victory.
St. Anthony improved to 10-5 on the season, while Altamont slipped to 8-3, with all three losses coming at the VHT.
